The provisional cover used to prepare a bound book for its primary cover and never intended to be the only cover. They can often be identified by the turn-ins which often project beyond the width of the turn-ins of the parchment primary cover.

Note
In the Byzantine tradition this is made of textile covering the whole book with turn-ins and it is used to soften the edges of wooden boards to prevent textile primary covers being worn away on the board edges. In the Netherlands in the 18th century it is a covering of white paper pasted around a book bound in boards, with turn-ins, before a primary cover of thin parchment is added. The purpose of the preliminary cover was to brighten the colour of the slightly translucent parchment and to hide details of the spine, such as spine linings.
