backing (bookbinding process)

In bookbinding, the process of sewing and shaping the spine of a sewn textblock, whereby the back edges of the gatherings are splayed outwards from the center of the back, thus shaping a ridge or shoulder on each side; it is done at the same time as or just after rounding.
