Media type as Linked Open Data

A media type is an identifier for file formats (e.g., text/html) on the Internet composed by two parts: a registry (e.g., text) and a record (e.g., html). They are handled by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which is the official authority for the standardisation and publication of these classifications.

This space has been reserved for providing a description in RDF, according to the Semantic Publishing and Referencing (SPAR) Ontologies and the Dublin Core Metadata Terms, of all the media types available at the official IANA webpage. The RDF representation of each media type is accessible by concatenating the URL https://w3id.org/spar/mediatype/ with the identifier of the media type of interest. For instance, https://w3id.org/spar/mediatype/text/turtle allows one to access the text/turtle media type resource. Each media type can be accompanied by agents acting as contributors, the related RFC documents documenting it, its current status (either official, deprecated or obsoleted), and direct links to wikipedia pages and DBpedia resources related with the media type. While the access to such resources in the requested format is handled by means of the usual content negotiation approach, it is also possible to get directly to the particular representation of the media type by adding one of the following extensions at the end of its IRI:

All these resources defining media types can be used for specifying particular formats (e.g., by means of the DCTerms property dcterms:format) that a certain entity, such as a book or a dataset, can have. In the FRBR-align Bibliographic Ontology (FaBiO), the specification of such format is a typical information associated to the manifestation level (i.e., fabio:Manifestation) of an entity.
