A tubular piece of a rigid material, usually metal, placed over the end of a ribbon or cord to prevent it both from fraying and to make it easier to thread through a hole. The same function can be performed either with adhesive which can then be trimmed or with a small piece of skin or paper attached to the end of the ribbon or cord which may also be decorated. Neither of these should be described as an aglet
