In 14 registers and volumes. Documents pertaining to the activity of the Congregation of War (Congregazione di Guerra) of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. Registers and volumes include deliberations, legal documents, and reports. Related documents in AOM series 6 Treasury (subseries Congregation of War) and series Treasury A at the National Library of Malta. |
Historical Note |
The Congregation of War of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta was in charge of raising funds for the defense of the island, including the upkeep of walls, fortifications, fountains and the army. The Congregation also handed out permissions and settled legal controversies related to these matters. The Congregation supervised the army and fortifications of the archipelago, including new constructions, projects, sites inspections, regulations for soldiers, and the election of military officials. It was headed by the Marshall (head of the Langue of Auvergne and conventual bailiff) and composed of the director of artillery, the director of fortifications, the director of the military engineers (genio militare), and a number of commissioners (for example, commissioners of fortifications and fountains). The Congregation submitted its accounts to the Grand Master and the Council. |
