Historical Note |
The bishop of Malta had more than one curia. The oldest was in Mdina, in the palace next to the Cathedral. A curia was established in Valletta after its foundation, and another was located in Gozo, administered by the provicar for Gozo. The curia in Mdina had two sections: the Curia Episcopalis Civitatis Notabilis presided over by the bishop or his vicars from the fifteenth to the seveneteenth century, and the Curia Episcopalis et Provicariales Civitates Notabilis (Curia Provicariales) headed by the Provicarius Civitatis Notablis from the late seventeenth through the eighteenth century, though the office of provicar began in 1591. The office of Provicarius Civitatis Notablis had jurisdiction over Mdina, Rabat, Dingli, and Siġġiewi. Curia Episcopalis et Provicariales Civitates Notabilis was suppressed in 1828 April 10. The Valletta curia was called the Magna Curia. The Magna Curia in Valletta was later moved to the Episcopal Palace in Birgu. Documents issued from the Magna Curia in Birgu were designated "in nova citate"; The curia in Victoria was part of the Curia Provicariales. |
