In 91 volumes. Records pertaining to the activities and administration of the Langue of Italy of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta related to the foundation, estimation, measurement, and survey procedures of territories, properties, and goods located in the Priory of Rome. Records include lists of properties, drawings, maps, notarial records, and legal documents from the Order of Saint John and the local institutions involved.

Historical Note

The Langue of Italy was the political and diplomatic body connecting the Convent and the seven Italian priories of the Order of Saint John: Barletta, Capua, Lombardy, Messina, Pisa, Rome, and Venice. The Langue of Italy had relationships with the local financial offices (ricette), the priories (priorati), the bailiwicks (baliaggi), the commanderies (commende), and the Embassy to the Holy See in Rome. The priories, bailiwicks, and commanderies of the Langue of Italy were required to produce documents describing the foundation, estimation, measurement, improvement, and survey of territories, properties, and goods belonging to them. The Langue of Italy managed the survey and improvement procedures in the local priories, bailiwicks, and commanderies. The Langue of Italy also managed goods and properties in Malta belonging to foundations established by members of the Langue. General and prioral visits (visite generali and priorali) took place in the priories every 5 years. Land surveys (cabrei or platee) and improvement visits (visite di miglioramento or miglioramenti) were carried out in bailiwicks, commanderies, and related granges (grancia or grangia), and membri. Land surveys needed to be completed every 25 years. Each bailiff and commander appointed a local notary to certify the procedure, in addition to a land surveyor (agrimensore) to take the measurements. Improvements were completed every 5 years to verify the conditions of the properties. For improvements, only the notary was involved. Two or more commissioners appointed by the assembly of the priory or by the provincial chapter verified the documents submitted by bailiffs and commanders both for land surveys and improvements. The final revision was made by the Langue.
